Welcome to Surry Central High School! Now is the time to learn more about yourself and develop skills that will help you be successful later in life. Volunteering in the community is one way to expand your horizons. There are also free and low-cost programs available. Below are some of the opportunities students might want to apply for. You are strongly encouraged to choose opportunities directly related to your interests and strengths, not just something you think will look good on college applications.

ASU's Anatomy & Physiology Summer Camp
The Appalachian State University Department of Health, Leisure and Exercise Science offers an intense and rewarding summer residential or day camp experience in Anatomy and Physiology! This one-week camp will provide high school students with hands-on experience studying the major organ systems of the body, as well as discussion about diseases and injuries that affect these systems. There are no prerequisites except a strong interest in the sciences and adequate science and math background to understand the labs and lectures. After each full day of exploration in the Science of Anatomy and Physiology, evening group activities are offered under the supervision of the college-student counselors.

ASU's Forensic Anthropology Summer Camp
Appalachian State University is pleased to offer a summer residential camp experience in Forensic Anthropology! Set in the mountains of western North Carolina, on the beautiful campus of Appalachian State University, this one-week camp will provide high school students 15-18 years of age with hands-on experience in forensic analysis of the human skeleton.

Appalachian State University, Catawba Valley Community College and NC State University have partnered together to offer summer camps. A camp for rising 9th and 10th graders will be offered in product development. This camp will allow students to use the design process to create and develop a product using engineering processes.

UNC Chapel Hill's Heels for Success
College-bound students will have the chance to experience the academic, social and cultural life at Carolina. Students will also learn about selective college admissions and ways to prepare for academic and extra-curricular achievement. Heels for Success is an all-expense-paid (excluding travel) one-day summer program to help academically talented, rising tenth and eleventh graders prepare for college. Over the course of the day, students will continue on the path toward college by getting an opportunity to be a part of the Carolina campus and learn firsthand about the academic and extra-curricular preparation required by selective colleges. Students will learn techniques for approaching the ACT, college applications, and essays.

WFU BAPTIST MEDICAL CENTER VOLUNTEEN PROGRAM
Each year, WFU Baptist Medical Center accepts applications from high school students for their Summer Volunteen Program. Students who are interested in medical careers and who are willing to commit to a long-term summer experience are encouraged to attend. The application can be found online and the program is competitive. Immersion in health career fields are difficult to obtain and this is a great opportunity to gain experience and knowledge.

NC STATE'S DESIGN CAMP
Design Camp is an annual series of pre-college summer programs offered at NC State University College of Design to high school and middle school students who are interested in design. Design Camp informs students about college study in design and raises awareness of the impact of design in all aspects of our everyday lives. The skills in design thinking and creative experience gained at Design Camp can empower students on their path toward becoming innovative problem solvers and prepare them to tackle the challenges of the future.

CAMP MED: Wake Forest School of Medicine
The program’s aim is to identify 10-15 ninth through twelfth grade high school students who have an interest in a health career and academic potential for a career in the health sciences. The goal of Camp Med is to identify a diverse group of students interested in health careers. Camp MED is a one-week day camp designed to recruit, educate, and prepare high school students for careers in the health professions. Activities include presentations, tours/observations and clinical experiences.
